Briefs description of vision 2:
Peter Grimes may be successfully presented in its wild, marine, and timeless context, but it is also a story rooted in the 18th century Suffolk world of its original creator George Crabbe. Its themes of alienation, bullying, fear, suspicion and abuse reflect timeless human truths: in telling the story we don’t need to ‘update’ it to feel that it can say something about who we are. I want to stay true to the original story’s setting – a time and a place where life was brutish and short, where human interaction was often basic, desperate and bleak, where life clung to the coastline like a barnacle to a rock, and there were none of the comforts of modern life. Listen to the ways that Britten captures this in his music. Research the way of life, the boats, the clothes, the workplace, and domestic details, and present a world which is rich in resonance and a gritty authenticity.
